Here's the questions that [livejournal.com profile] the_ogre asked me, along with my answers:

1. Career goals: you are given the opportunity & skills to do anything you'd like, career-wise. What do you pick & why?

Quite honestly? I'd love to be a violinist in a symphony. Unfortunately, I haven't picked up a violin in about 13 years, so I'm pretty sure that's an impossibility. Other than that, provided that I could either make a living off of it or not worry about making a living, I'd like to write.

2. Of all the places you've lived, which one strikes you as the most interesting, geographically?

Hmm. It's hard to narrow it down to just one place.

Tucson had the thunderstorms with the lightning that spread over the entire sky, and the sunsets that looked as if someone had painted the sky with molten gold.

Western Pennsylvania had glorious autumns... I still miss them every September. Thousands of leaves of scarlet, burnt orange, purple, gold, green. Also, believe it or not, I miss the snowy winters! I miss hearing my boots crunching in the snow & how the bare trees would look like charcoal sketchings against the white background.

Other places I miss for various reasons, but those are the ones I'd say that I miss geographically.

3.What difficulties, with regard to her family situation, do you envision for your child when she gets to (for instance) junior high school, and how are you likely to address them?

I know I won't be able to protect her from kids who think our family is just plain weird & wrong. I just hope that I can teach her that being different isn't bad & that's she'll be a strong person. I'm not naive though... when you're a young teen, fitting in feels very important. Hopefully she'll be able to find areas where she *does* fit in, and having her family structure not "fit the mold" won't be a big deal. *crosses fingers*

I think the bigger problem might be teachers who just don't "get it". We've run into this a little already, but it hasn't been too bad. Luckily in the Bay Area, teachers tend to not blink at the notion of two moms, but then they're a little confused when they try to fit a third parent into the picture, especially when they realize that he lives with us & we all like each other! We try to be honest with teachers from the start though; it's a good way to weed out the ones who aren't going to be tolerant.

Another area where we could run into confusion and possible intolerance is with her homeschooling group. Many of the parents in the group are very religious & have taken their children out of schools just so they won't have to be exposed to the likes of us! *cackles* Ironically, part of the reason why we've been homeschooling & why we were considering private schools is to lessen her exposure to the conservatives who will freak out over her family! I guess I should remember that she's going to butt up against intolerance one of these days & I won't be able to protect her from it. I just have to teach her that differences are good things. :)

4. What is your opinion on the cultural relevance of The Three Stooges?

I've been thinking on this a bit. Actually, this was the hardest question!
They're definitely a permanent fixture in our culture & their routines will probably still be funny centuries from now. They definitely made their place in physical comedy. I'd say they helped to carve out a niche for Jewish humor in mainstream culture, but the Marx Brothers also deserve credit for that & I don't remember who came first.
It's hard for me to point out the specifics because by the time I became aware of the Three Stooges, they were already a household name. Nearly every comedian/ne cites them as a big influence. And maybe that's how they're culturally relevant: what would comedy be like today if the Three Stooges hadn't been around?

(and btw, I preferred Curly to Shemp.) ;)

5. Aside from current and future tattoos, are you planning, or interested in, any other sort of body modification?

I've been wanting to get my tongue pierced for a long time, but finances and time have prevented me from doing it so far. I don't think I'm going to get that as my first piercing, however. I'm either getting my ears redone first or piercing a nostril.
