What exactly is Chrismukkah?
Chrismukkah is a "hybrid" holiday... a festive mix of favorite traditions from both Hanukkah and Christmas. Chrismukkah is a cultural gumbo of cherished secular holiday rituals and traditions shared by interfaith families with both Jewish and non-Jewish members. According to the most recent United Jewish Communities (UJC) survey, there are 5.2 million Jewish people in America today and within the past 5 years, nearly half who married, wed non-Jewish spouses. In the western states, 42% of all married Jews are intermarried and nationwide, nearly 1/3rd are married to non-Jews. Chrismukkah is the holiday for many of us... and accurately captures the reality of our December experience.
Chrismukkah may be celebrated from the 1st night of Hanukkah until Christmas Day. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown December 7th, and therefore Chrismukkah lasts 18 days! Chrismukkah is all-inclusive and non-judgmental - Saints and sinners, naughty and nice, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, straight and gay... all may celebrate without guilt, obligation or self-consciousness. All are invited to "Spin the Dreidel" under the mistletoe. On a more serious level, Chrismukkah can help teach children of mixed heritage about rituals from both sides of their family. Most of all, kids (and grown-ups too) love Chrismukkah because there are 18 nights of presents!
