When I was a kid, we lived about 1/2 an hour from Punxsutawney, PA. For some reason, my dad was well acquainted with the inner circle of the Groundhog Club (those guys with the top hats that pull the groundhog out of his hole on Feb. 2nd), probably because our church was at Gobbler's Knob & he was a biology professor at a university, one who would often study disease patterns in wildlife.
Now while it's not highly advertised, it's no secret that the current Phil is not the original one. Groundhogs eventually die, so the old Phil is replaced with a new one from time to time. At some point, my dad acquired a deceased Phil.
Shortly after that, we had groundhog for dinner. Draw your own conclusions. :)
