  • potatoes
  • 2 HUGE red onions (unfortunately the last ones of the season; next week's onions may include Walla Walla Sweets & yellow globe onions)
  • 3 heads iceberg lettuce
  • 2 heads garlic
  • handful of garlic bulbils
  • lime basil
  • 2 bunches of beets (with greens!)
  • some more zucchini & yellow summer squash (no blossoms this time)

  • Sweet corn will be coming in 3 weeks, and the cucumbers & an additional variety of iceberg lettuce (there's more than one kind?) will be ready next week.

When I was a kid, we lived about 1/2 an hour from Punxsutawney, PA. For some reason, my dad was well acquainted with the inner circle of the Groundhog Club (those guys with the top hats that pull the groundhog out of his hole on Feb. 2nd), probably because our church was at Gobbler's Knob & he was a biology professor at a university, one who would often study disease patterns in wildlife.

Now while it's not highly advertised, it's no secret that the current Phil is not the original one. Groundhogs eventually die, so the old Phil is replaced with a new one from time to time. At some point, my dad acquired a deceased Phil.

Shortly after that, we had groundhog for dinner. Draw your own conclusions. :)
