dinner's cooking

I'm making a lentil/barley/vegetable soup today, using up some of the leftovers in the fridge.
I just threw 2 cups of lentils in the bottom of the crockpot, chopped up an onion, 2 stalks of celery, several baby carrots, and threw all of those veggies on top of the lentils. Opened a can of diced tomatoes, dumped that in, added some chopped garlic, some vegetable bouillon cubes, poured in about 1/4 of a bag of barley, and added water to cover. Turned the crockpot on high for now, but I might switch it to low if it looks like it's getting too hot.

We'll see how it turns out... I wonder if I should make some bread to go with it?

Operation Laundry Detergent begins early

I got into a manic stage tonight & ended up making the laundry detergent tonight. That recipe makes a LOT! It looks like it's gelling up nicely... tomorrow we'll see how it turns out. I need to get to Smart & Final soon for some stuff, so I'll pick up a few lidded buckets for the detergent.

I've used this stuff before, but the person I was living with made it then & it turned out kinda watery. It still worked pretty well, even watery, so I'm really interested in seeing how well this stuff cleans the clothes.

Is it silly that I care so much about this? Every penny counts, and it will save me some money, but not all that much right away. But I still feel proud of myself for being able to do it.

the weekend

In an effort to save some money (plus it's supposed to be environmentally kind & low in skin irritants), I'm digging up my old homemade laundry detergent recipe. Hopefully I'll get this made sometime either tomorrow or Monday.

We had planned to go to the San Francisco Pride Festival tomorrow, but I think we've decided not to go. We're worried it will be too long of a day (not to mention we'd have to be on the train at 7:45am!) & we've also heard rumors that it might not be safe. We went to a pride festival earlier in the month, so we'll just skip this one & watch the parade on TV. We can still have a good family day without going up there tomorrow.

I'm rather worn out right now... today we ran a ton of errands: Costco, Trader Joe's, Target, and one of the grocery stores we needed to go to. I was exhausted & decided we needed to call it a day even though we still needed to go to two more stores. Nexus brought the Munchkin & me home, then took all of the laundry to the laundromat (the apartment complex has raised the prices for using the washers here, so we've started taking the laundry elsewhere) while I fixed Munchkin dinner. Watched Good Eats (realized it was a rerun), taped Oliver's Twist, and glanced a little at Iron Chef (a rerun we already have on tape). Nothing too exciting to relate, just another busy Saturday.
